Ukraine fields turbojet-powered Alexa Spatium interceptor to counter Russian strike drones

The Ukrainian Defense Forces have integrated a new jet-powered interceptor drone, designated Alexa Spatium, into their operational arsenal to counter low-flying aerial targets. The turbojet-driven platform was developed by Ukrainian engineers specifically to engage fast-moving threats, including Russian jet-powered Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5 strike drones, as well as propeller-driven Shahed-131 systems, reconnaissance UAVs, and helicopters.

Measuring approximately 1.5 by 1.7 meters, the composite airframe is launched via a mobile catapult deployable within minutes from a standard pickup truck. The platform operates across low and medium altitudes using pre-set coordinates or direct operator guidance. It features television and infrared sensors for target acquisition, interchangeable warheads (fragmentation-blast, shaped-charge, and thermobaric), and an automated remote launch sequence. If a target is not engaged, the aircraft is designed to return to its launch site for recovery and reuse, as reported by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

The deployment reflects a broader shift within Ukrainian defense technology toward turbojet propulsion to address Russia’s expanding use of high-speed strike platforms. Ukrainian military intelligence previously noted that the Geran-3 reaches speeds of up to 370 km/h, approximately twice the velocity of older propeller-driven variants. The Alexa Spatium joins other recently fielded Ukrainian jet interceptors, including SkyFall’s P1-SUN “JetKiller” and Firebolt Engineering’s Griffen, as forces seek higher speeds to counter faster uncrewed assets.
