The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) issued a sources sought notice on August 20 seeking industry concepts for the Next Significant Variant (NSV) of the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM). Managed on behalf of a 12-nation NATO consortium, the market research initiative aims to identify potential developers and suppliers for an updated ship-defense interceptor capable of countering evolving aerial threats.
The notice specifies that the NSV must retain the 10-inch diameter form factor of the current ESSM Block 2 to ensure compatibility with existing Mk 41 Vertical Launching System quad-pack canisters. Beyond maintaining physical dimensions, NAVSEA is requesting technologies capable of operating in contested radar, electro-optical, and infrared environments. Key performance objectives include tracking closely spaced targets, discriminating between threats, and defeating electronic jamming or decoys.
Responses to the notice are due by October 19. The Navy is requesting that proposed designs adhere to a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) to allow for adaptable subsystems and interoperability across consortium members. While the market research may inform future procurement or prototype contracts under Other Transaction authority, NAVSEA has not established a formal schedule or funding commitment for the program.
