The Portuguese Air Force has entered an agreement with domestic defense technology firm Tekever to integrate the AR5 unmanned aerial system into its operational fleet, with initial deliveries and operational capability scheduled for September. The contract encompasses aircraft, ground control infrastructure, the proprietary ATLAS mission management system, and comprehensive operator training, though financial details and unit quantities remain undisclosed.
The AR5 is a fixed-wing, medium-altitude long-endurance platform featuring a 20-hour flight endurance and a 50-kilogram payload capacity. Equipped with satellite communications for Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations, the aircraft can utilize short or unpaved runways. Air Force leadership indicated the integration provides extended range, endurance, and operational flexibility across Portugal’s Exclusive Economic Zone, alongside supporting coastal protection and wildfire response operations.
The acquisition reinforces Tekever’s expanding international footprint, which includes usage in Ukraine and selection for a British military intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance program valued up to £400 million. Following recent Russian claims of capturing an operational AR3 system in the Bryansk border region, company representatives noted that systems feature built-in data security protocols and continuous hardware and software iteration, rendering captured physical components merely temporary snapshots of rapidly evolving technologies.
