Ukrainian defense firms merge naval USVs and strike drones to extend operational reach

Defense manufacturers MAC HUB Holding and Sky Defenders have signed a memorandum of cooperation to integrate uncrewed aerial systems into the Katran family of uncrewed surface vessels. Sky Defenders produces several combat-proven UAV systems, including the Vyryi kamikaze drone, the Yaryi and Zigzag interceptors, and the fixed-wing Zigzag-S mid-strike attack platform, which features a range exceeding 150 km, speeds up to 250 km/h, and a 3–5 kg warhead payload.

The manufacturers disclosed to Defender Media that combining these capabilities aims to expand strike ranges against hostile assets. A special forces supervisor overseeing MAC HUB projects noted that the joint integration seeks to engage targets up to 2,000 km away, focusing on coastal guard units, radar installations, air defense systems, command elements, and critical infrastructure.

The Katran USV platform, whose technical details were outlined by Mykhailo Fedorov in March 2025, supports varied modular armaments including torpedoes, miniguns, machine guns, MANPADS, and Dead Fly interceptor drones. The addition of Sky Defenders platforms further enables the surface vessels to engage maritime, ground, and aerial targets while conducting reconnaissance. MAC HUB previously established a similar partnership with Paramount Greece in June as part of its external technological integration strategy.
