Ukrainian SPYS interceptor drone takes down Russian Geran-5

The new Ukrainian SPYS interceptor drone has successfully intercepted a Russian Geran-5. German Aid to Ukraine received video of the interception from a source it describes as credible.

According to German Aid to Ukraine, SPYS was developed through the German-Ukrainian joint venture Quantum WIY Industries. The interceptor is still undergoing combat testing, but the first interceptions are already taking place.

SPYS was developed by Ukrainian company WIY Drones. The interceptor can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h, and its primary targets are jet-powered Shahed drones, Militarnyi previously reported.

To operate at such speeds, the company developed its own electronic components. SPYS is also equipped with Ukrainian-made motors produced by Motor-G and developed according to WIY Drones’ technical specifications.

The drone carries a 300-gram warhead, can engage targets at distances of up to 12 km and has a flight time of up to five minutes.

The first SPYS drones delivered to the military were equipped with a guidance system for intercepting targets on a head-on course. The company is also working on an algorithm that allows the interceptor to pursue a target from behind.

SPYS can be launched from the ground or from a carrier platform such as a helicopter, aircraft or drone. A special handheld launch mechanism is also available.

The system is equipped with a monitor that allows the operator to see when the interceptor has acquired a target. The operator then presses the launch mechanism, and the drone flies toward the target.

According to WIY Drones, SPYS can be used to protect infrastructure and other important facilities.
