U.S. Army Staff Sgt. builds custom modular drone to advance tactical PSYOP missions

Driven by the need for cost-effective, easily field-repairable unmanned aerial platforms at the company and battalion level, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tyler Allen independently researched, designed, and tested a custom unmanned aircraft system engineered specifically for Psychological Operations (PSYOP) missions.

Drawing on his background flying remote-controlled aircraft and military drones, Allen spent off-duty hours refining computer-aided designs, building prototypes, and running flight tests to create a platform tailored to information-related payloads rather than standard surveillance.

Unlike off-the-shelf commercial reconnaissance drones, Allen’s aircraft features a modular architecture designed for rapid mission customization. The platform supports the aerial dissemination of printed information products, loudspeaker operations, and specialized information payloads that help influence audiences while keeping Soldiers at safe stand-off distances.

Built with commercial off-the-shelf components, the system enables unit-level operators to maintain, repair, and modify the aircraft without specialized tools or reliance on lengthy supply chains. Additionally, its adaptable design allows commanders to integrate future payloads as operational requirements evolve.

Allen emphasized that seeing a tactical gap drove him to build a practical option that drone operators can repair, customize, and employ independently without requiring extensive training. By taking grassroots initiative, Allen demonstrated how tactical-level innovation directly supports mission readiness, providing PSYOP units with a flexible, highly sustainable tool to maintain an information advantage in complex operational environments.
