Bulgarian defense authorities are calling for the accelerated procurement of counter-unmanned aerial systems following the crash of a Ukrainian Maya-type decoy drone near the Bulgarian-Romanian border on August 8, 2026. The aircraft came down near the village of Yovkovo, roughly 100 meters from the border, placing it near a Romanian compressor station and approximately 1,000 meters from a Bulgarian compressor facility serving the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline.
Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov stated that the platform features a wooden airframe, with its internal engine serving as the primary metal component. Stoyanov noted that Bulgarian officials are awaiting formal clarification from Ukrainian authorities regarding whether the aircraft originated from Ukrainian territory.
Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov stated that there is no indication of deliberate targeting against Bulgaria. Military assessments suggest the unmanned platform was diverted off its course by active electronic warfare systems before dropping below radar coverage. President Iliana Iotova urged institutional cooperation following the event, emphasizing that national security and infrastructure protection remain the primary focus while investigations continue.
