NATO fighters operating under the Baltic Air Policing mission intercepted and neutralised an uncrewed aerial vehicle that violated Latvian airspace overnight. The scramble involved Italian Eurofighter Typhoons operating out of Lithuania and Turkish F-16 jets deployed in Estonia. The aircraft intercepted the target near the village of Rugāji in northeastern Latvia, approximately 30 kilometres from the Russian border.
Military authorities attributed the navigation failure and subsequent airspace violation directly to active Russian electronic warfare operations in the region, as said by the Latvian National Armed Forces in a press release. According to these official statements, intense signal jamming and electronic countermeasure activity altered the flight path of the unmanned platform. The incident occurred concurrently with a large-scale Ukrainian strike involving over 50 drones targeting western Russian logistics hubs, including port infrastructure at Ust-Luga and storage facilities in Tver.
The successful kinetic interception resulted in no ground casualties or structural damage, with the debris coming down in an unpopulated forested zone. Local authorities issued air raid warnings across four eastern municipalities, advising civilians to take precautionary measures during the operational window. Defense officials highlighted that electromagnetic interference in border corridors presents an ongoing operational challenge, making similar stray system incursions increasingly likely while regional conflict and active spectrum warfare persist.
