US Navy tests 10-meter Hadalus autonomous underwater vehicle

Raytheon and Composite Energy Technologies demonstrated the Hadalus uncrewed underwater vehicle during US Navy exercises, according to an official press release from Raytheon.

The autonomous underwater platform is engineered to detect and interact with submerged objects independently, operating without reliance on surface vessels. Measuring 34 feet (approximately 10.4 meters) in length with a cross-section width of roughly 1.8 meters, the vehicle features an operational range exceeding 2,000 nautical miles (approximately 3,700 kilometers).

Constructed from carbon fiber, Hadalus utilizes a free-flooding architectural design. Developers noted that this structural approach maintains high strength and payload capacity while reducing overall manufacturing expenses.

The platform is configured for covert logistical support in combat environments. Hadalus can transport several tons of cargo—including fuel, ammunition, provisions, and medical supplies—over its 2,000-nautical-mile operational radius. The vehicle can navigate to shorelines, deliver up to four pallets of supplies, raise anchor, and submerge for return operations.

Designed with a modular architecture, multiple Hadalus units can be packaged inside a standard 20-foot shipping container and deployed without requiring specialized naval vessels. Developers project the unit cost of Hadalus to be between one-third and one-fifth that of comparable long-endurance uncrewed underwater vehicles, allowing for higher volume production and rapid manufacturing scaling while offering a low signature profile compared to surface logistics options.
