Drone explodes in Moldova during Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine

A drone crashed and exploded in Moldova during Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

On the morning of September 30, a drone entered Moldovan airspace before crashing and exploding near the village of Hîrbovăț in the Anenii Noi district. The incident occurred amid another massive Russian attack on Ukraine.

The drone entered the country’s airspace at around 5:43 a.m. local time. It then crashed outside the village of Hîrbovăț and exploded. No injuries were reported initially. Police and National Army units were dispatched to inspect the area, Moldova’s Ministry of Defense said.

That same morning, Russia attacked Ukraine with 188 drones, including 86 jet-powered drones, as well as Zircon, Oniks and Iskander missiles. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 155 drones and five missiles were destroyed or suppressed.

The new jet-powered drones have become a separate challenge for Ukrainian air defenses. They fly faster and at higher altitudes than the drones traditionally used in mass attacks. In response, Ukraine is expanding the production of its own interceptor drones capable of countering such targets. The new systems are already being tested and used by some combat units.

Russian ballistic missiles also remain a separate threat to Ukraine. To intercept them, Ukrainian air defenses rely heavily on U.S.-made Patriot systems, whose stock of interceptor missiles remains limited.

The violation of Moldovan airspace by drones amid Russian attacks on Ukraine is not a first. On September 24, drone fragments were found near the border, while in August Moldova recorded the crash of a Geran-type unmanned aircraft. Earlier in August, a Russian S8000 Banderol missile also entered Moldovan airspace during an attack on the Odesa region.
