BAE Systems has unveiled Shadow EW, a new family of compact electronic warfare payloads specifically designed for small airborne platforms. The systems provide critical situational awareness and self-defense capabilities to improve mission effectiveness in contested environments, supporting a full range of applications including targeting, deception, survivability, and collaborative effects delivery.

The modern battlefield is changing at an unprecedented pace, requiring adaptable electronic warfare capabilities across all platform sizes to ensure survival, according to Rebecca Cruz, director of Shadow EW products at BAE Systems. The company noted that recent conflicts have demonstrated how smaller aerial platforms and rapidly evolving electronic warfare dictate modern combat, where production mass has become a decisive factor.

Designed to be produced in large quantities at a low cost, the Shadow EW systems rely on commercial microchips for high-powered computing and supply chain efficiency rather than utilizing highly customized architectures built for traditional tactical jets. Josh Niedzwiecki, vice president and general manager of BAE’s Electronic Combat Solutions, explained during a briefing that the company funded the development ahead of specific requirements, shifting corporate focus toward speed-to-fleet and affordable mass in response to defense acquisition reform. The systems utilize open standards to remain platform agnostic and streamline integration for platform prime contractors.
