Norwegian firm introduces hybrid-electric heavy UGV capable of mounting artillery and air defense systems

UGV FLEX L12

Norwegian defense manufacturer UGV Defence presented its UGV FLEX L12 heavy tracked unmanned ground vehicle during the DALO Industry Days 2026 exhibition in Denmark. Built on a proven commercial chassis, the hybrid-electric autonomous platform is engineered for heavy logistics, mobile power supply, and heavy weapons integration. Designed to carry payloads up to 12 tons, the platform can be configured to support 40 mm Bofors cannons, air defense systems, or strike missiles.

As reported by Oboronka, the vehicle utilizes a hybrid-electric powertrain generating up to 650 horsepower, featuring a onboard generator capable of recharging its internal battery in 40 minutes. UGV Defence CEO Karl Ivarsson noted that the system represents a significant increase in capacity compared to maximum two-ton unmanned platforms currently observed in active operation in Ukraine. The platform integrates SLAM-based navigation for operation in GPS-denied and electronic warfare environments, alongside leader-follower software enabling automated convoy operations for up to 15 platforms.

The FLEX L12 features self-cleaning tracks, an automatic tension adjustment mechanism for debris, and a maximum operational range of 800 kilometers at speeds up to 25 km/h. Offered in logistics (L12-L) and high-capacity power support (L12-P) variants, the underlying chassis has undergone field trials with the Norwegian Armed Forces. While the base chassis is already in serial production, deliveries of the fully militarized hybrid variant are scheduled to begin next year.
