Saab unveils NIMBRIX prototype low-cost missile for counter-drone defense

Swedish defense manufacturer Saab introduced a prototype of its new NIMBRIX anti-aircraft missile during the DALO Industry Days 2026 exhibition in Denmark. Designed to counter massed drone attacks, the system utilizes a fire-and-forget mechanism to engage NATO Class 1 and Class 2 unmanned aerial vehicles weighing up to 600 kilograms. The architecture focuses on cost-effectiveness and modularity, providing military operators with a practical solution against low-cost aerial threats.

As reported by Oboronka, the platform is engineered for seamless integration with existing customer command and control (C2) frameworks. According to a Saab spokesperson, the design prioritizes flexibility over legacy architectures, allowing targeting data from radars—such as the Giraffe 1X—to feed directly into a weapon terminal for launch execution. Once launched, the missile navigates autonomously toward its target using an infrared homing seeker paired with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead and a proximity fuze.

The current prototype features a four-launcher container mounted on a stationary tripod, with commercial variants planned to house between 9 and 12 missiles per container. While the effective range is currently listed at 2.5 kilometers, Saab aims to extend operational reach to 5 kilometers. Serial production is scheduled for 2028 following commercial availability in 2027, with future adaptation planned for mobile ground vehicles and naval vessels.
