Slovakia is negotiating the potential procurement of light attack and training aircraft L-39NG Skyfox. The platform is being evaluated not only for pilot training but also as a viable asset for intercepting jet-powered drones.
Officials emphasize a preference for acquisitions that involve the participation of the national defense industry. As Defense Minister Robert Kalinak notes in a comment to Future Army, the state aims to involve domestic enterprises in such defense contracts. In particular, during parallel discussions regarding KC-390 transport aircraft, Slovakia seeks to direct approximately one-third of the contract value to local companies.
Developed by Czech company Aero Vodochody as an evolution of the L-39 Albatros, the L-39NG features a Williams International FJ44-4M turbofan engine, a digital glass cockpit, and multiple weapon stations. For counter-unmanned aerial system roles, the aircraft can be configured with 12.7 mm and 20 mm gun pods alongside AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles.
