Marines with the 1st Maintenance Battalion executed a field exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, on August 19, 2026, focusing on advanced field intermediate maintenance, supply operations, and tactical readiness.
The training served to increase proficiency in analog processes, tactical communication networks, and expeditionary combat skills to prepare units for Exercise Steel Knight 27 later in the year. During the exercise, personnel utilized a Philips Additive Hybrid metal 3D printer to manufacture low carbon steel wheels and notably 3D printed dirt bikes, testing the vehicles for technical errors in the field. The scope of operations encompassed specialized technical maintenance across multiple domains, including small arms repair on Mk 19 grenade launchers, servicing brake calipers, and repairing medium tactical vehicle replacement transmissions. Additionally, metal workers and engineer equipment officers operated from an underground bunker to assemble and repair drone flight controllers. Integrating advanced manufacturing techniques and rapid field repair capabilities highlights the ongoing technological adaptation of logistics elements within an expeditionary environment.
