Ericsson and Finnish critical communications infrastructure operator Erillisverkot have successfully tested Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology to detect, locate, and track drones in real time. The technology was tested during a demonstration in Helsinki, including field trials at Vuosaari Harbor.
The main challenge of modern security systems is that small, low-altitude drones are difficult to detect with traditional sensors, especially when they are not connected to a network or emitting wireless signals. ISAC solves this problem by turning standard mobile base stations into a distributed sensor network, according to an Ericsson press release.
The system analyzes radio signal reflections using the Massive MIMO platform, edge computing platforms, and artificial intelligence algorithms. Multiple network points gather information simultaneously, making it possible to build a comprehensive picture around critical facilities, ports, borders, or strategic infrastructure arrays without the need to deploy separate, costly radars.
The development is seen as an important step toward the evolution of 5G Advanced and 6G standards, allowing government structures and defense forces to significantly enhance situational awareness in complex operating environments by relying on already established telecommunications infrastructure.
