Northrop Grumman has completed a successful projectile flight test for Raid Hunter, its gun-based air defense system, validating performance and generating flight data for short-range defense development. During the aeroballistic testing, a new 50mm projectile was fired from an XM913 Chain Gun, producing high-fidelity data for nearly every shot and confirming pre-test expectations.
The test marks progress in developing a guided, proximity-fuzed 50mm round designed to help military forces address large volumes of aerial threats, including cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, short-range ballistic missiles, and coordinated swarm attacks.
Raid Hunter combines advanced battle management, Bushmaster Chain Gun technology, and precision ammunition to provide a scalable terminal defense solution for bases, airfields, and critical infrastructure, according to Northrop Grumman.
At the core of the system is guided 50mm ammunition launched in small salvos, capable of executing continuous inflight maneuvers to increase lethality against complex aerial targets. Designed with a modular architecture that supports palletized and future vehicle-mounted configurations, the platform-agnostic system features C-130 transportability for rapid repositioning across diverse operational theaters.
