The future of war: Ukrainian bomber drone rescues UGV from unexploded FPV

A unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) belonging to Ukraine’s 42nd Separate Mechanized Brigade was struck by a Russian FPV drone while executing a resupply run to forward infantry positions. The enemy drone’s warhead failed to detonate upon impact, leaving the live munition lodged directly inside the ground platform’s cargo basket among the military supplies. Footage of the operational sequence was published on the official Facebook page of the 42nd Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Attempting manual offloading presented severe risks, as moving the cargo by hand could have triggered an immediate explosion. To bypass direct human exposure to the unexploded ordnance, operators deployed an airborne bomber drone fitted with a tethered grappling hook. The flight crew maneuvered the aerial system to hook and lift the unexploded FPV drone directly out of the UGV’s cargo bay.

Following the successful extraction, the ground robotic platform resumed its trajectory and delivered the supplies to the designated position. The brigade noted that the event demonstrates the integration of multi-domain uncrewed assets in active combat, where ground vehicles, aerial strike platforms, and engineering crews operate as an interconnected system.
