UK allocates £490 million for directed energy weapons across naval and ground platforms

The United Kingdom is expanding its directed energy weapon initiatives, backed by a four-year £490 million ($668 million) allocation within its national Defence Investment Plan. While the DragonFire high-energy laser remains the country’s primary public effort, the Ministry of Defence is developing broader capabilities across both maritime and land domains while withholding technical specifics on additional classified programs.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard confirmed the funding commitment, stating that the investment will deliver DragonFire and lay the foundation for next-generation directed energy capabilities. Pollard noted that further program announcements will be made as necessary. Beyond the immediate four-year framework, UK defense planning anticipates allocating significant long-term capital toward directed energy technologies through 2035.

Directed energy systems are valued for their low cost per shot when intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles or cruise missiles. However, the initial capital expenditure remains high. The estimated unit cost for the DragonFire demonstrator stood at approximately $163 million, though series production is expected to reduce unit expenses alongside minimal operational firing costs.

Current engineering efforts focus on reducing the physical dimensions of the DragonFire system to facilitate integration across diverse platforms. In parallel with naval integration plans, previous field evaluations included testing a vehicle-mounted anti-drone laser integrated onto a Wolfhound armored vehicle. Despite earlier public discussions regarding the potential transfer of a DragonFire prototype to Ukraine, no official confirmation or evidence indicates that a deployment has occurred.
