The U.S. Army has awarded Heaviside Industries a contract worth up to $99 million to supply, field, upgrade, and maintain MOTH handheld spectrum analyzers through 2031.
Selected following an online competitive bidding process involving 99 companies, the California-based manufacturer produces the pocket-sized device designed to detect drone control links, walkie-talkies, and other communications signals across a frequency range of 5 MHz to 6 GHz, as reported by The Defence Blog.
Weighing under a pound with its battery installed, the smartphone-sized unit features built-in GPS, a direction-finding capability to locate signal sources, and vibration alerts. Engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions and rough handling between 14 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit, it provides frequency detection that can be operated without specialized electronic warfare training. Each unit retails for approximately $4,950.
