U.S. military personnel and law enforcement agencies are significantly augmenting operational surveillance along the southern border through the tactical deployment of advanced small unmanned aircraft systems.
Operating in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, operators utilize specialized platforms—including the C100X, Skydio X10D, and Black Hornet—to bridge critical coverage gaps where ground agents cannot maintain a continuous presence. This capability allows forces to monitor under-covered sectors effectively along the American border without over-exerting ground personnel, according to DVIDS.
The technical integration of these systems provides crucial situational awareness before U.S. ground units enter potentially complex or hazardous areas. Master trainers instruct operators on interpreting advanced thermal imagery, maneuvering around environmental obstacles, and maintaining positive aircraft control under fluctuating meteorological conditions. The platforms are deployed to detect groups preparing to cross the Rio Grande, identify individuals who have already crossed, and assist agents in navigating difficult border terrain during apprehension operations
