During a massive Russian aerial assault targeting western Ukraine, a high-speed jet-powered drone crashed or was intercepted just four kilometers from the Polish border. In response, the Polish military scrambled fighter jets and temporarily suspended operations at airports in Lublin and Rzeszów to secure national airspace.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported a massive explosion near the Ukrainian border checkpoint at Yahodyn, noting that military aircraft were immediately airborne in response to the escalation, according to RMF24.
Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Services, confirmed that preliminary assessments indicate the unmanned system impacted or was neutralized on the Ukrainian side of the border without breaching Polish airspace.
The morning attacks also prompted the Government Centre for Security to issue alerts for residents across the Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships. Meanwhile, residents in central Poland heard loud noises caused by interceptor jets breaking the sound barrier during defensive maneuvers. At midday, following the cessation of the threat, the military announced the conclusion of air operations and the lifting of the alert.
For its part, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine denied reports of any direct hits on border infrastructure or crossing points. Military authorities emphasized that all defensive actions were conducted in a controlled manner in compliance with standard safety procedures.
