During a weapon system technology demonstration hosted by the Ministry of National Defense at the Seungjin Training Ground in Pocheon, several unmanned aerial vehicles from major South Korean defense contractors crashed or failed their missions.
The exhibition, supervised by the defense minister to evaluate takeoff, landing, and maneuvering capabilities, brought together approximately 1,500 attendees, including senior military commanders, civilian experts, and international defense delegations from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Germany, reports The Chosun Daily.
While initial platform integration went according to plan—highlighted by Hanwha Aerospace successfully executing short-run maneuvers—subsequent flights by platforms from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), LIG, and Ned Solutions encountered operational faults. Notably, KAI’s platform lost thrust immediately after launcher clearance and disintegrated upon impact, while its subsequently deployed backup unit also suffered a loss of control shortly after liftoff.
According to the Ministry of National Defense of South Korea, five out of twelve systems that participated in the event failed their demonstration flights, whereas three military-operated platforms completed their assigned objectives without incident.
Commenting on the results, a defense ministry official stated that the exhibition was organized to verify the practical military applicability of emerging systems under development, emphasizing that the setbacks should be viewed as part of the broader technology maturation process.
