Finnish company Patria has successfully demonstrated the remote operation of its Patria AMV armored vehicle from a distance of 7,800 kilometers, with an operator in Japan controlling a vehicle located in Finland during a test conducted on August 25 to 26.
The demonstration took place with the participation of representatives from Japan’s defense department and various defense industry companies. Patria vice president Janne Räkköläinen noted that the event was a major success. Real-time situational awareness during the test was provided by the Patria DOME system alongside satellite data from ICEYE, while communications and visuals relied on technologies from Nokia, SAVOX, and Basemark, with data transmission handled by Telia solutions, according to the Patria press release.
Patria stated that the testing of the unmanned armored vehicle demonstrated the feasibility of safely managing military hardware over extreme distances, suggesting the concept could apply to logistics operations, convoy escorts, and waypoint patrolling. While remote-controlled armored platforms have been explored by other nations, questions remain regarding how widely such operational concepts will be adopted on modern battlefields.
