Germany to modernize Bundeswehr data encryption for €1.7 billion

Germany to spend up to €1.7 billion on military network security.

Germany plans to procure encryption technology for the armed forces’ data networks worth up to €1.7 billion. The technology will be supplied by Secunet.

A key parliamentary committee is expected to approve the agreement with the company to modernize encryption across the Bundeswehr’s communications networks.

Initial deliveries under an order worth just over €100 million are expected to begin next year.

The framework agreement will run for four years and builds on an existing agreement with Secunet. Under the contract, the company will establish the so-called Secure Inter-Network Architecture (SINA), as well as provide planning, maintenance, training and repairs.

The program will be financed through a corresponding budget commitment for the following year. In addition, Germany’s Ministry of Defence expects around €6 million in additional costs for the system’s use through 2030.
