The discovery comes ten days after an August 4 incident involving a failed drone strike targeting a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft utilized for military supply transport. Investigative reports indicate a second drone collided with a DHL cargo aircraft shortly after the airport implemented a temporary operational shutdown, as reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The Leipzig/Halle hub serves as a critical air cargo and military logistics node for NATO operations and Ukrainian military transport support. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated during a coalition summit that the government is coordinating closely with security agencies and will issue a formal assessment regarding responsibility for the operation. While regional security sources suspect involvement by Russian intelligence services, official government statements have not formally attributed the attack, and Russian authorities have denied involvement.
