British company Voyant has demonstrated software for tracking underwater targets in combination with the Thales S2087 sonar. The test was conducted as part of a UK Ministry of Defence program to improve anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The software uses probabilistic tracking and particle filters to process acoustic sensor data. The system estimates the possible location of an underwater target and updates the estimate as new information becomes available.
Voyant integrated its software with the S2087 sonar, after which the results were passed to an AI-enabled decision-support system developed by British company Mind Foundry.
The demonstration involved the UK Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy, Thales UK and Mind Foundry.
According to Voyant, the additional data processing could help operators maintain tracks on weaker or more distant underwater targets, assess their classification with greater confidence and spend less time on manual analysis.
The work focused on extracting more information from the existing sonar system without replacing its hardware.
