France is accelerating development of the Rafale F5 standard, issuing upstream contracts for critical technologies as the Franco-German next-generation fighter effort faces structural restructuring. The Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) awarded risk-reduction contracts to Dassault Aviation, Thales, Safran, and MBDA to address high-risk technical areas ahead of the formal F5 development contract. Scheduled to enter service around 2033, the F5 configuration will serve as the backbone of French tactical aviation through the 2030s.
The modernization program encompasses major overhauls across key aircraft systems. Thales is developing the RBE2-XG active electronically scanned array radar utilizing gallium nitride semiconductors, which will increase output power, extend detection range, and integrate artificial intelligence capabilities designed for collaborative combat. Additionally, Thales will provide a stealthy Inter-Vehicle Data Link (IVDL) waveform to maintain secure communications in jammed environments, according to the official press release of the Direction générale de l’armement (DGA).
MBDA and Thales are collaborating on a fully digital version of the SPECTRA self-protection suite to counter complex threat waveforms and dense electronic environments by 2035. Safran has begun preliminary design work on the M88 T-Rex engine, targeting a 20 percent increase in thrust to nearly 19,850 pounds. Armament advancements will include the hypersonic ASN4G nuclear missile slated for service by 2035.
The accelerated upgrade shifts the F5 from an incremental update into a comprehensive combat ecosystem. The aircraft will operate alongside uncrewed combat aerial vehicles and remote carriers, incorporating distributed architectures to preserve sovereign high-end operational capabilities.
