Ukraine is expanding artificial intelligence capabilities beyond unmanned platforms and into strike missiles, marking a significant step in the autonomy of its offensive weaponry.
Specifically, a number of Ukrainian companies are developing artificial intelligence-enabled missiles to address the technical challenges posed by high-speed flight, as Brave1 head Andrii Hrytseniuk reported in a commentary for Business Insider.
“AI was initially deployed at scale in drones,” Hrytseniuk noted, pointing out that while drone integration speeds are sufficient, missiles demand much higher operating velocities. He also confirmed that AI is increasingly integrated into missile systems, showing initial successes and numerous ongoing developments alongside more than two hundred companies working on AI-based components for defense systems.
The push toward autonomous missile guidance coincides with Kyiv’s broader investments in long-range strike weapons deployed against Russian military and energy infrastructure. Mykhailo Fedorov, former defense minister and founder of a Kyiv-based venture fund supporting military startups, emphasized that low-cost strike missiles and AI-powered guidance remain key strategic priorities.
While specific operational mechanisms and development timelines remain undisclosed, Brave1 stressed that the technology augments capabilities rather than removing human operators entirely. This human-in-the-loop requirement mirrors broader battlefield applications where soldiers and developers maintain operational oversight despite an increasingly autonomous kill zone dominated by frontline drones and expanding unmanned logistics and evacuation systems.
