U.S. Navy personnel and the Icelandic Coast Guard are conducting academic training on operating the Lightfish unmanned surface vessel in Whale Bay, Iceland, as part of exercise Northern Viking 2026.
The training focuses on teaching operators to deploy and control independent, solar-equipped drones designed to track threats in real-time across the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap. This was reported by DVIDS.
Lieutenant Commander Michael Severin of Task Force 66 emphasized that the bilateral collaboration leverages local geographic expertise alongside U.S. technological innovation to enhance maritime domain awareness. The joint training program pairs American unmanned systems with the operational knowledge of Icelandic personnel, strengthening readiness, interoperability, and strategic cooperation between allied nations in the North Atlantic.
