Ukrainian FP-1 drones traveled over 3,200 kilometers to strike facilities at the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Preparation Plant (GCPT) in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, setting a new range record for strikes since the full-scale invasion.
The operation was carried out on September 9, 2026, by Deep Strike units of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine.
The target of the attack was the gas deethanization unit at the Gazprom Pererabotka facility, located 18 kilometers from Novy Urengoy. Impacts were recorded on plant grounds, and the extent of the damage is currently being assessed.
Unlike standard strikes on oil refineries, this strike targets the gas processing sector, which serves as the initial link in converting unstable gas condensate into commercial products. The Novy Urengoy GCPT receives raw materials from the Nadym-Pur-Taz region—Russia’s largest gas condensate basin—and has a design capacity of up to 19.5 million tons of raw material per year. The targeted unit is responsible for processing deethanization gases containing ethane, a key raw material for the neighboring Novy Urengoy Petrochemical Complex, which accounts for about 10 percent of Russia’s total polyethylene and polypropylene production capacities.
Damage to the deethanization unit disrupts the integrated production chain, making it impossible to supply deethanization gas to the petrochemical complex for subsequent manufacturing of ethylene and polyethylene. Restored in 2024 following extensive construction to replace a previous unit that burned down, the new line has now been halted once again as a result of the long-range strike by Ukrainian drones. Furthermore, during the same operation, the Special Operations Forces struck the facilities of the Purovsky Condensate Processing Plant, which processed 13.4 million tons of raw material in 2025, confirming the capability of Ukrainian long-range systems to reach deep into the adversary’s rear.
