Bundeswehr receives STARK Seetaube USV for maritime reconnaissance

The Cyber and Information Space Forces Command (Kommando CIR) of the Bundeswehr has taken delivery of the Seetaube, an unmanned surface vessel (USV) developed by German defense firm STARK in partnership with the Cyber Innovation Hub Bundeswehr.

Engineered on STARK’s nearly 6-meter Vanta platform, the Seetaube is fitted with radar, optical sensors, and specialized camera suites. The primary operational concept positions the autonomous craft as a mobile secondary bearing point, enabling cross-bearing signal triangulation to determine the origin of maritime emissions and detect potential threats at sea. Operating on pre-planned routes with human-in-the-loop oversight, the system transmits surveillance data back to operators in real time, as announced on the official page of the Bundeswehr’s Cyber and Information Space Forces Command.

The underlying Vanta platform underwent trials in the Atlantic during NATO’s REPMUS and Dynamic Messenger exercises in Portugal, conducting missions that included port security, over-the-horizon reconnaissance, and high-value asset escort.

The deployment of autonomous maritime platforms carries implications for monitoring non-standard maritime activities, including operations linked to Russia’s shadow fleet. These vessels, often operating under flags of convenience with obfuscated ownership, conceal position data and challenge conventional maritime oversight. Commenting on broader European security, Maksym Cherkis, Chief Operating Officer at STARK Ukraine, noted that modern maritime risks require persistent autonomous surveillance to relieve crewed platforms while accelerating decision-making cycles.
