German company Isar Aerospace achieves first orbital launch from continental Europe with Spectrum rocket

German launch services provider Isar Aerospace successfully reached low Earth orbit with its two-stage Spectrum launcher, lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway. The mission marks the first time a privately developed European launch vehicle has successfully reached orbit from continental Europe.

The 28-meter-tall rocket, powered by ten engines, soared from the launch pad carrying six commercial and educational CubeSats alongside an in-orbit technology experiment. Supported by the European Space Agency’s Boost! program, the flight follows an initial test flight in 2025. This qualification flight successfully satisfies the first milestone of the European Launcher Challenge, which requires providers to reach orbit no later than 2027, as reported by The European Space Agency.

Géraldine Naja, ESA’s Director of Space Transportation, noted that the achievement represents a major step toward a more diverse and autonomous European launch service sector. Following this milestone, Isar Aerospace will focus on scaling up vehicle production and executing its growing backlog of commercial and institutional orders.
