Ukrainian company Zvook is conducting research and development on hydrophones for passive underwater acoustic monitoring, with potential applications including maritime security, vessel awareness, port monitoring, and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure.
Unlike active sonar systems that emit acoustic signals and analyze their reflections, the Zvook system emits nothing and relies entirely on ambient environmental sound to detect and classify objects. The company emphasizes that the underwater acoustic environment differs significantly from aerial conditions due to distinct sound propagation, background noise, reflections, and environmental factors, making current efforts focused on collecting real-world data and determining reliable detection capabilities. Currently in the research and testing phase rather than a finished product stage, the company is open to commercial joint testing and development projects with defense organizations, maritime operators, infrastructure owners, and system integrators facing real monitoring challenges.
